World. I haven't been around, I've been keeping myself busy with so much it's just ridiculous. I'm living my DST lifestyle while trying to run a movement/company (Product of the 90's). Managing Ripp has proved to be a full time job but I'm loving every minute of it. I hope to be able to bring you guys along for the ride. I'm back at it. Educated Fly is back in action, seriously this time.
It is funny though how at one point, everyone was in love with blogger and they slowly but surely fell off. I have my reason, what's yours?

What's up world! I'm still here. Posts will be on heavy flow tomorrow I promise, I'll post at least three super dope features. I've just been putting in so much work with this new company that it's taking up so much time. Who knew managing artists would be so time consuming?! I love it though, it's so much fun just networking and making connections with people.
On another note, I'm heading back to DC on Saturday. Winter break is over (sighs). I don't know how excited and disappointed I am about this ha-ha. When All Else Fails.

Yet again I found an intriguing article from the New York Times entitled Economy Doesn't Slow Demand for Early Entry to College by Jacques Steinberg. The article was about how despite the economic downturn the country has faced over the past two years, early entrance programs at many schools are still doing well and some even better than previous years. For schools like Brown University, Duke University, Cornell University and Dartmouth College they find that increases in applicants applying for early entrance.

Many administrators were a bit baffled by these results because the general consensus was that applicants would not engage in such programs because once accepted for early entrance you not allowed to apply to any other schools, therefore missing the opportunity to possibly receive more financial aid from another institute.
Although these schools are receiving increasing numbers, many of them are not accepting the same percentages as previous years. As statistics show, the typical early entrance applicant is white with good financial means. Many schools are seeking to be as diverse as possible, in doing so they are decreasing the number of early entrance applicants to make room for the other intelligent applicants that simply don't have the same financial options.

Hey guys! I'm back, finals are over and I'm home!
So where was I...

I read an article that was in the New York Times a little while ago and it really got my mind going. The article was entitled In Job Hunt, College Degree Can't Close Racial Gap by Michael Luo. The article discussed how even successful educated African American were still facing the backlash from the recession, and felt it was due to their race. The article argues that the racial gap between black and whites continues to exist especially given the rotting job market. African Americans are now scrubbing their resume's away of any details that would tip off their skin color. The article talked with Johnny Williams a college graduate who recently got his M.B.A. from the University of Chicago (that's top notch) and has worked for the likes of J.P. Morgan. Williams has since then been looking for work, but has has no luck. Williams is now retouching his resume so he can make that next step with potential companies. He often finds companies reading his resume and liking him on paper, but upon meeting him suddenly loose the enthusiasm.

What does retouching include:
Making their name unambiguous. For example, Barry Jabbar Sykes a graduate from Morehouse College, a historically black college in Atlanta now uses Barry J. Sykes on his resume.
“You want to be a nonthreatening, professional black guy,” said Winston Bell, 40, of Cleveland, who has been looking for a job in business development.

What's up world! Here is another Educated Fly official album review for Wale's Attention Deficit. For those of you not familiar with Wale, he hails from Washington, DC and has been doing his thing consistently for several years now. With the early hit Nike Boots and his current smash single Chillin featuring Lady Gaga, Wale is now the face of the DMV area (DC, Maryland, Virginia). He has taken the reigns and put DC on the map. I am beyond excited to see him in concert this Saturday (12/5) at my school! Can you say front row?
As many people have already expressed, Wale's debut album was well worth the wait. He presents listeners with catchy hooks, clever lyrical content and addictive beats! Speaking of beats, Wale introduces the world to Go-Go. Go-Go is simply live instruments. One tracks like Pretty Girls and Mama Told Me the world is exposed to DC's original go-go music. I will be honest and say it takes a special ear to appreciate go-go. When I first heard it, I wasn't the biggest fan, but after hearing artists like Wale create a hit using it, I quickly learned to appreciate it.
Attention Deficit can easily be considered a classic album. Wale is truly a lyricist and for those of you that appreciate content will love this album. No questions. If you are not only a hip hop fan, but a music lover, you will enjoy this album.

Momma Said Knock You Out.

What's up world! As requested by a follower I'm doing an album review for BoA's latest album entitled BoA. Let me just say, this album is dope. I'm so glad it was requested, this is the first time I've heard of her and I'm in love ha-ha. BoA is an international star finally making her name in the US market. She has long been Korea and Japan's biggest pop star! Lucky for us, she's finally here.

Her sound is classified as Pop/Electronica, it's very upbeat and club inspired. I could totally see all her songs being played at parties. To add along to the sound, if your not a fan of auto-tune, I probably wouldn't suggest this album for you. Almost every song that BoA sings has been infused with auto-tune. I think it works for certain artists and she happens to be one of them.
Her new album is great! It's one of the albums I would blast in the mini just to draw attention to myself ha-ha. The lyrical content isn't very deep but considering the genre, I still think she does a nice job of delivering good music to her fans. One of my favorite songs on her album is actually her current single I Did it For Love featuring Sean Garrett. Ah, I love it! Another great song on her album is called Control.

Overall rating: 4 out of 5

So the semester is coming to an end for us college students. This brings about excitement and stress because we know that it means FINALS. Oh man, finals are no fun but we know it comes with the territory!

So I've prepared a list for: The Semester Wrap Up

1. Make sure you know the date and location of all exams

2. If needed, meet with your professors to go over an material you don't understand that will be on the exam

3. Make a list of the the work due before the end of the semester and set dates to complete them. (Although the weekend are for fun, sometimes having the whole day to complete work is useful!)

4. Dedicate at LEAST 5 hours a day of studying per exam. This may seem like a bit much, however as you all may know the final is usually the largest percentage of graded work. So it's can't harm you by spending a lot of time studying for it.

5. Get sleep. I know I'm the last person that should say this ha-ha, but it really does help. I once heard that the sleep you get two days before is the actual sleep that matters two days later. (ie: the amount of sleep I get on Sunday night, actually effects how I will feel on Tuesday). It's just a philosophy I heard though. Use .your own discretion.

6. Remember after the semester ends, you get a whole month off! And then you can relax. So just put in the hard work now so you can reap the rewards later.

What's up world!
I hope everyone is doing well. I'm just touching in with everyone, I know it's been a few days since I've posted. I have been SO busy. It's crazy. To let you guys get an idea of what I have on my plate, listen to this: Of course the most important thing going on is school! Always. Secondly this blog. The blog is such a passion of mine and I devote so much time to it. Even if I'm not posting, I'm always working on it. Whether it's just adjusting the layout, finding catchy post titles (sounds silly but I put a lot of thought into them ha-ha), researching post content, just everything. Next I just got a music internship working with Miller Music Group and I'm doing artist development working with Deangelo Redman (next big thing FYI. Google him baby). So that's really exciting. I'm always doing something with that. It's almost like a dream job, I'm really enjoying it. And lastly the next big thing I have going on is........a clothing line! Yes, I can officially say it. My good friend Kyle and I are starting a clothing line! I'm not entitled to say that name of the line just yet, we have to get the legal things worked out, but it's a dope name let me just say ha-ha. We have some deadlines in the works so hopefully, I'll be able to show you guys some sample products within the next couple of months!

I'm curious as to what the youth think about The No Child Left Behind Act put into effect in 2001 by President Bush and currently still being supported by President Obama. So here is my second official review. This time I'm reviewing Ryan Leslie's new album Transition. I really enjoyed his album. His producing abilities are beyond amazing to me, I mean the beats for every song different, intriguing and creative. As far as the lyrical content of the album goes, I thought it was decent. I wasn't overly impressed with any particular message sent but I still enjoyed the album. I feel like the general vibe for the album was very laid back, there weren't really any songs that were like his former hit "Diamond Girl" off of his last album, which was extremely upbeat and catchy. My favorite song on his album would have to be the song entitled Nothing. It's fairly face paced with catchy lyrics.
What I enjoy most about this album is that how relatable it is. With each song I could somehow relate it to my own and my own experiences. That's really hard to do.

FRESH. Is the word I would use to describe Ke$ha. She is amazing. Her lyrics don't promote a great well being ha-ha, rather the lifestyle of a partier! But hey work hard play hard right? Her sound would be classified as Pop but don't let that steer you away if your not typically into that kind of music, because she kind of makes her own verison of Pop given the lyrical content. Check out her MySpace for yourself. She also has a free video on iTunes actually for her song Tik Tok (which is DOPE).

Hey guys, I just wanted to share something with you. I have so much on my mind. I just got back from a panel discussion that was hosted at my school about the DCPS (DC Public Schools) and it truly left me dumbfounded. Not only that, but shocked; shocked that the United States capitol has considerably the worst public school system in the United States. It is no secret that most urban communities usually have defective school systems with little support from the surrounding community or the government, but it doesn't help that even some of the teachers in the school systems aren't fully committed to their positions and roles in these children lives. It doesn't help that the kids have no motivation to work hard and excel either. There are so many societal issues that come into play that further incorporate into reasons why DCPS have so many problems.
I say all of that to conclud that...
WE ARE THE SOLUTION.

I left that discussion feeling like it is now my duty to help these kids. They aren't bad kids, yes they sometimes make unwise decisions but they are good kids that simply need guidance. Since I'm here in DC I need to help. I realize I have gotten away from the primary reason for the blog, which is Education. I'm here to get back on track. An Educated Fly exists to show kids that it's cool to be educated, go to class, live in the library, do your homework. That's cool. That is what An Educated Fly strives to prove. Yes the fashion and music portion of the blog are interesting but those sections are to help people become cultured, because as our mission states we want everyone to become immersed in culture as another way to further educate themselves, but neither of those are most important. Education comes FIRST.

So now...

1) New book of the month! We'll be reading Reallionaire by Farrah Gray. I've read this book twice already and I'm ready to read it again. It's a fantastic book with a inspirational story included. So in case you all haven't been able to tell, I'm just about in love with Mike Posner's music. He just released his new mixtape One Foot Out the Door and it's flawless. Consider this my first official review of something. First I want to say the cover artwork is great. (It's actually the background on my laptop right now.) But the artwork plays off of his last mixtape A Matter of Time with the clocks (very clever!). Onto the music which is the best part. From the intro to the outro, Mike keeps listeners entertained and constantly surprised. Unlike A Matter of Time, I think on this mixtape we see a wider range of Mike's vocals. There is some use of auto-tune, but it's used sparingly and very well. I now consider him a singer/vocalist, it wasn't as explicit on his previous mixtape.
One Foot Out the Door is available on iTunes for free, so make sure you download it. It is worth it! This will be bumping in the Mini for a while! One of my favorite songs on the mixtape, although tough to choose is I Don't Trust Myself. The hook is so catchy and the lyrics hit home. I love it! But another favorite is Don't Trust Me because it includes one of my favorite other groups 3OH!3 and their song Starstrukk. I could go on and on, I just like them all! Get the mixtape guys! You won't regret it. Nice job Mike!

He does it yet again. Mike Posner who is absolutely one of my favorite artists has a new mixtape coming out. Watch this video of him producing a song on his new album. He recreates Souljia Boy's Kiss Me Thru The Phone and I personally think it's better than the orignial ha-ha. His new mixtape will be available for free on iTunes on October 29th. I am literally counting down the days!

A sound that tickled my fancy recently would have to be Joe Brooks. I came across him on MySpace and I really like his sound. It is a bit slower than what I typically listen to but it's pretty cool. He's a singer with an amazing voice. Sounds very well trained. His lyrics are memorable and make your mind wander. What more could you ask for? On another note, I love his style! Very original which I totally appreciate. He has several good songs on his page so check it out. He also has a Facebook fan page that you guys might want to check out as well.

Ok here is a sidenote on the personal tip. School is CRAZY right now. I have so much work to do, the semester is half way over but it's still crunch time. I finally start tutoring/mentoring for F.L.Y. next Monday so I'm super excited about that. I mentioned what the program was to this woman today, and she was like you should be very proud of yourself for what your doing for these kids. She talked about how I may not know it now, but I will deeply impact these childrens lives. I have to say, I never really looked at it like that. I'm just one person trying to help another kid out the only way I know how. Education is important to me and I want to show other people why. DC has one of the worst public school systems in the United States. To me that almost makes no sense! Nonetheless, I'm here to help the students that actally want to make a change in their own lives.
Secondly, this is a big weekend in DC. Howard University's homecoming! OW OW! This is going to be amazing haha. I am thorughly excited and can't wait to go. And lastly, I am in the works for a big project with a fellow blogger and good friend of mine Kyle. It shall be something epic. I can't speak on it much now but it's going to be insane.

When You Struggle Is When You Learn.

Hey guys! I hope everything is going well for everyone and school isn't driving anyone too crazy ha-ha. I just had my second midterm today for my sociology class and I'm feeling pretty confident. I studied for like 6 hours last night! My brain still hurts ha-ha.
On another note, I wanted to discuss the book of the month for a little. I have managed to find some time to start reading The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. This book is amazing, it reaffirms so many things that we subconsciously do without knowing it. The book also gives a lot tips about how we can become more effective people and thus happier people.

The first habit: BE PROACTIVE
Not only in the traditional sense of simply doing something or taking initiative, but also deciding within yourself how something will affect you. As a college student there is always an obstacle to face, whether it be physical, social, or psychological (getting up for class, adapting to a new environment, new relationships, school work, peer pressure, drinking). There are several types of stimuli that affect us, but it is up to us as to how we respond.

This image is from the book. It's called the Proactive Model. It shows us what things help influence our value based decisions (responses). What is important to realize is that all of these factors are manipulative; thus we can change them ourselves! We can change with by doing simple things such as listening to our language. Instead of saying "That's just the way I am" try saying "I can choose a different approach." Simple things like that make a difference.

I hope this helped! This book is changing me already. Keep on reading guys.

New tunes? Of course. Always on the look out, I've recently come across Mr. Hudson. I reently got his mixtape which was free. It was pretty dope. I enjoyed it. One of my favorite songs is called Stiff Upper Lip, however one of his most popular is entitled Super Nova featuring Kanye West. His sound is R&B, alternative, and acoustic. What's up guys. I hope everyone is doing well. School is hectic let me just tell you. Midterm season is here and in full swing.
On a side note however, I wanted to share with you guys this new program/club I'm a part of, its called FLY (no pun intended) it stands for Facilitating Leadership in Youth. It serves youth in the southeast DC area and is a program to help mentor and tutor students and improve their overall GPA, attendance at school, reading, writing, research and organizational skills. It's a great program and I can't wait to start mentoring the kids. That is truly a passion of mine, I love getting a chance to impact and influence a youth's life by just being there and helping in any way that I can. I'll let you guys know how everything turns out.

So last night I was at a Matt and Kim concert. BANANAS! And I was front row!! They were so amazing. That was like the dopest concert I've been to since M.I.A. They performed about a 10 song set and saved the infamous Daylight for last, and thank God because the mosh pits went crazy!! They were both so nice and entertained us the whole night. POP AFRICANA!
A magazine started by Oroma Elewa was initially started with the purpose exhibiting the non-mainstream, art-driven, style and beauty of Africa. I learned about this magazine while browsing Dazed and Digital. On the actual Pop Africana website they state they serve as the "Africana Book of Style." Bold statement ha-ha. But after taking a look at what they give the reader, I completely agree. They seem to really be on to something. I love it so far!
On the home page of the website they say "Pop'Africana aims to reeducate the globe on genuine African ideas of beauty and style." Judge for yourself guys. Here are some images from the website.

So I'm starting a new project with the blog. I suppose my idol Oprah had a little bit to do with this. I want to create something like a book club. Not exactly however. Every month or so I will be reading a new book and hoping for some feedback from you guys. This month the book is The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. I've been meaning to read this book for some time now, but I was in my school's library today and decided to pick it up.
